Discovery Dialogue builds upon the legacy of Artemide founder Ernesto Gismondi, who envisioned Discovery as an ongoing exploration of light through technological research, optoelectronic expertise, design culture, and manufacturing knowledge. Carlotta de Bevilacqua has further developed this vision, seeking new ways to initiate a dialogue between light, space, and perception.
A Shared Design Language
All Discovery variants share a common design principle: a lightweight aluminum profile houses an LED strip that directs light onto a transparent PMMA surface with a pattern of distributed micro-incisions. These micro-incisions create a highly efficient and homogenous light emission, ensuring perfect visual comfort and consistent, enveloping light on both sides. When switched off, the surface is nearly transparent; when switched on, it is flooded with light.
A Dynamic Dialogue
Discovery Dialogue introduces a surprising, dynamic element to Gismondi's original design. A diagonal cut, reminiscent of Lucio Fontana's iconic slashed canvases, divides the surface in two. This intervention splits Discovery Dialogue into distinct light emissions, each perfectly calibrated in its properties.
A Play of Light and Shadow
The diagonal laser cut interrupts the sequence of micro-incisions, sparking an emotional dialogue between the two halves by dividing the light. Each side acts independently, creating an ideal balance between pure, white light and its various color temperatures or a diverse interplay of colors.
