SHERIDAN, WYOMING – October 24, 2024 – Muuto, a Danish design company known for its modern and functional products, has introduced the Set Lamp, a unique and innovative lighting solution designed by Toronto-based designer Jamie Wolfond.
Intuitive Design Inspired by Screw Threads
The Set Lamp features a threaded aluminum body that allows users to easily adjust the shade's height by simply rotating it. This intuitive design, inspired by the screw thread, enables users to customize their lighting experience and create their own sense of space.
"I think you need recognizable elements to communicate with people the same way that if you're speaking a language to someone, you need words that they understand," says Wolfond. "Good designs are more of a question than an answer. Hopefully, this one is too."
Backward Design and Tactile Functionality
Wolfond's design process, which he calls "backward design," involves starting with the end result and experimenting until a useful and meaningful application is found. The Set Lamp is a testament to this approach, originating from an idea for an exhibition in 2019.
The lamp's tactile functionality allows for a unique interaction with light. Its upward-facing light source bounces off a reflector shade, creating bright yet comfortable, glare-free illumination.
Creating Zones of Light
The Set Lamp's adjustability allows users to create their own zones of light without affecting the entire space. This is particularly useful in larger spaces where individuals may want to create their own illuminated area without disturbing others.
"Set Lamp is the result of a type of adjustment that I was curious about," says Wolfond. "I think there's a social element to it, especially in a bigger space, being able to create your own zone without affecting the whole. It is very bright, especially for a bounce light, so it creates a very different atmosphere when it's up versus down."
A Unique Character for Individuality
The Set Lamp's unique character encourages individuality and illustrates Wolfond's unconventional approach to design. He aims to create objects that are both functional and relatable, drawing inspiration from the material world and industrial production.
