SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Feb. 6, 2025 – T-Systems, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, in partnership with GEA, a Grenoble-based electronics and automation company, has secured a contract to develop and manage a satellite-based truck tolling system in Alsace, France. The client is the European Community of Alsace (Collectivité Européenne d'Alsace, CEA), and the contract spans eight and a half years, with an option for a three-year extension.
**Innovative Tolling Solution for Alsace**
The new system will implement a kilometer-based eco-tax for vehicles weighing 3.5 tons or more, utilizing existing European Electronic Toll Service (EETS) on-board units (OBUs) in trucks. This integration allows for seamless and uninterrupted travel across Europe, benefiting from a standardized tolling solution. Trucks not equipped with EETS OBUs can purchase e-tickets online.
**R-PASS Opérateur to Operate the System**
The system will be operated by R-PASS Opérateur, a newly formed company owned 85 percent by T-Systems Road User Services and 15 percent by GEA. T-Systems will handle the end-to-end solution, encompassing satellite-based position data recognition, movement data allocation to toll domains, toll data generation, invoicing, customer service, and contract management. GEA will be responsible for operating control bridges and mobile control points.
**Technological Leadership and Growth Strategy**
“We are very happy to have been awarded the contract for this innovative project. With our satellite-based, modular toll platform, we are setting technological standards in Europe. Thanks to the flexibility of our solution, new toll areas such as Alsace can be expanded seamlessly and efficiently. This order confirms our growth strategy and shows that Europe's cutting-edge technology can compete internationally,” says Christoph Ahrendt, member of the T-Systems Management Board and responsible for the toll business at T-Systems.
**Flexible and Scalable Tolling Platform**
The T-Systems Tolling Platform's flexible architecture allows for easy digital addition of new toll areas, ranging from individual structures like tunnels to entire regions. Its versatile API interface facilitates integration with other systems, enabling seamless addition of individual modules to existing business processes of toll service providers and third-party providers.
