Deutsche Telekom Premieres Digital Battery Passport at IZB Wolfsburg

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – October 18, 2024 – At the Internationale Zuliefererbörse (IZB) in Wolfsburg, T-Systems, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, is unveiling its innovative solution for a digital battery passport, the "Battery Pass." This groundbreaking technology documents the entire lifecycle of a battery, from production to recycling, by enabling information sharing among suppliers, battery manufacturers, and vehicle manufacturers.

The "Battery Pass": A Digital Twin for Batteries

The Battery Pass integrates data from the manufacturing process and usage into a digital twin, providing a comprehensive and transparent record of the battery's history. This digital twin contains all relevant data, documenting the origin and authenticity of the information.

Mandatory from 2027

Starting in February 2027, the product pass will be mandatory for all batteries with a capacity exceeding 2 kWh that are placed on the EU market, including those used in electric motorcycles and cars. The Battery Pass serves as an eco-label and helps determine the residual value of a battery, facilitating proper reconditioning or disposal.

Available for Purchase or Rent

T-Systems offers the Battery Pass for purchase or rent. The solution handles various semantics, protocols, and formats, preparing the data for different stakeholders across the battery lifecycle. Companies share information via data spaces like Catena-X, ensuring data origin and verifiability based on GAIA-X principles.

Over-the-Air Updates and Enhanced Security

At its IZB booth, T-Systems is also showcasing solutions for connected vehicles, including over-the-air updates and protection against cyberattacks. The company's over-the-air platform (OTA) provides a comprehensive, secure, and scalable solution for updating software and firmware in networked vehicles. It is already used in approximately 30 million vehicles worldwide.

With Automotive Security Monitoring (ASM), automakers can protect their vehicles from hackers. ASM analyzes data from individual vehicles for potential attack patterns, utilizing databases of known vulnerabilities, information from the vehicle-specific digital twin, and other backend systems.
