SHERIDAN, WYOMING – November 18, 2024 – Topsoe, a global leader in carbon emission reduction technologies, is playing a crucial role in the development of Brazil's first hydrogen-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant. The plant, located in Rio Grande, will utilize Topsoe's innovative HydroFlex™ and H2Bridge™ technologies to produce SAF and renewable diesel from renewable feedstocks.

A Pioneering Project for Sustainable Aviation

This pioneering project marks a significant step towards decarbonizing the aviation industry in Brazil. The plant is expected to commence operations in the first half of 2028, producing 16,000 barrels of renewable diesel daily and contributing to a more sustainable future for air travel.

Topsoe's Technologies: Enabling Green Fuel Production

Topsoe's HydroFlex™ technology is a cornerstone of this project, enabling the conversion of fats, oils, and greases into renewable jet and diesel fuels. This process aligns with the growing demand for sustainable alternatives to traditional fossil fuels in the aviation sector.

Complementing HydroFlex™, Topsoe's H2Bridge™ technology will generate green hydrogen from the waste gases produced during the renewable fuel production process. This integrated approach maximizes resource efficiency and minimizes the environmental impact of the plant.

Significant Carbon Emission Reduction

The Riograndense plant, when fully operational, is projected to achieve an annual emission reduction of over 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). This substantial reduction highlights the significant contribution this project will make to Brazil's efforts in combating climate change.

Supporting Brazil's Ambitious Emission Reduction Targets

Elena Scaltritti, Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, emphasized the importance of this project in the context of Brazil's ambitious airline emission reduction targets:

"With Brazil setting ambitious airline emissions reduction targets in October this year, Riograndense is one of the country's early movers to ensure SAF supply is available for airline operators on time."

A Partnership for a Sustainable Future

Felipe Jorge, Managing Director of Refinaria Riograndense, expressed his confidence in Topsoe's partnership:

"Topsoe is the right partner to 'progress towards the total conversion to a biorefinery.'"

He further added:

"[This] will allow us to become a reference in the SAF production in Brazil."

A Leading Role in Green Fuel Solutions

Topsoe's involvement in this groundbreaking project reinforces its position as a leading provider of innovative technologies for green fuel production. The company's commitment to sustainability and its expertise in hydrogen and renewable fuel solutions are contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for the aviation industry and beyond.
