Fuel Prices in Germany See Notable Increase at the Start of 2025

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Feb. 7, 2025 – At the beginning of the year, fuel prices in Germany rose after the CO2 price for climate-damaging fuels was increased from January 1, 2025. In January, prices for Super E5 rose by 6.6 cents, for Super E10 by 6.5 cents, and for diesel by 7.3 cents. The average price was 1.793 euros per liter for Super E5, 1.734 euros for Super E10, and 1.676 euros for diesel.

Price Fluctuations and Trends

On January 2nd, the price of Super E5 was cheapest at 1.763 euros, before a price increase followed in the first week of January. The highest prices were reached on January 17th and 20th, at 1.804 euros per liter. The cheapest fueling options were on Wednesdays and Thursdays, while prices were highest on Sundays and Tuesdays. In January, the prices for Super E5 and Super E10 showed significant fluctuations, with daily changes of 9.9 to 13.1 cents per liter. For diesel, the price fluctuations were on average between 11.4 and 13.3 cents per liter.

Regional Price Differences

In January 2025, the average cheapest prices for a liter of Super E5 in Berlin were 1.773 euros, in Baden-Württemberg 1.776 euros, and in Hesse 1.778 euros, which is below the national average. Super E5 was most expensive in Schleswig-Holstein at 1.819 euros, in Saxony-Anhalt at 1.813 euros, and in Saxony at 1.812 euros. Fuel prices also rose on German motorways in January. Super E5 became 6.7 cents more expensive and cost an average of €1.963 per liter. Prices were particularly high on the motorways in Hamburg at €2.329 and in North Rhine-Westphalia at €2.214. “Filling up away from the motorway is extremely worthwhile - in Hamburg, for example, you can save 52 cents per liter of Super E5. With a tank volume of 70 liters, that's €36.40 per fill-up.”

City Price Rankings

In January 2024, there were also significantly different prices for Super E5 in different German cities. The highest prices were recorded in Konstanz at 1.923 euros, in Trier at 1.915 euros, and in Dormagen at 1.893 euros. The cheapest places to fill up were in Kaiserslautern at 1.732 euros, in Esslingen am Neckar at 1.741 euros, and in Ludwigsburg (Württemberg) at 1.741 euros. Due to these differences, the price range between the most expensive and cheapest cities increased from 16.4 cents to 19.1 cents.

Brand Price Rankings

In January 2025, the brands ED at 1.739 euros, Globus at 1.753 euros, and bft at 1.767 euros recorded the cheapest prices for a liter of Super E5. The most expensive providers were Shell at 1.798 euros, Westfalen at 1.80 euros, and Aral at 1.807 euros. The price difference between the cheapest and most expensive brands was up to 6.8 cents per liter of Super E5.
