SHERIDAN, WYOMING – November 06, 2024 – Hankook Tire, a global leader in the tire industry, has announced a significant step forward in its sustainability journey. The company has begun mass production of tires using three types of ISCC (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) Plus certified carbon black derived from end-of-life tire pyrolysis oil. This achievement marks a significant milestone in the company's commitment to environmental responsibility and its pursuit of a circular economy.
This breakthrough is the result of a collaborative effort within the Tire-to-Tire Circular Economy Model consortium, a group of 12 Korean companies and institutions, including Hankook Tire, dedicated to establishing a circular economy for tire production in South Korea. The consortium aims to address the growing global demand for carbon neutrality and sustainable materials in the tire industry.
"Hankook Tire is committed to leading the charge towards a sustainable future for the tire industry," said a Hankook Tire representative. "Our participation in the Tire-to-Tire Circular Economy Model consortium and the successful mass production of tires using recycled carbon black demonstrate our dedication to innovation and environmental stewardship."
The development of the ISCC Plus certified carbon black was made possible through collaborative research with consortium partners HD Hyundai Oilbank and HD Hyundai OCI. These partners utilized a mass balance approach to develop the three types of carbon black by applying refined oil obtained from pyrolysis of end-of-life tires.
Hankook Tire has confirmed its readiness to integrate these sustainable materials into its mass production processes. Starting this year, the company will incorporate the certified carbon black into its tire products to meet global sustainability requirements. This move signifies a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of tire manufacturing and promoting resource efficiency.
"This is not just about meeting current sustainability standards; it's about paving the way for a truly circular economy in the tire industry," added the Hankook Tire representative. "We are committed to continuous improvement and collaboration to achieve our sustainability goals."
Looking ahead, Hankook Tire plans to further its collaboration with consortium partners to develop carbon black made with 100% pyrolysis oil. This ambitious goal aligns with the company's broader vision of utilizing 100% sustainable materials in its tire production by 2050.
This initiative by Hankook Tire not only contributes to reducing waste and reliance on virgin materials but also highlights the potential of the circular economy in driving sustainable development. By transforming end-of-life tires into valuable resources for new tire production, Hankook is setting a precedent for other industry players to adopt innovative and eco-friendly practices.
The company's commitment to sustainability extends beyond the use of recycled materials. Hankook Tire is actively involved in various initiatives focused on enhancing energy efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting sustainable practices throughout its operations and supply chain.
Hankook Tire's latest achievement serves as an inspiring example of how industry leaders can drive positive change through collaborative innovation and a commitment to sustainability. The company's efforts in developing and implementing sustainable solutions are contributing to a greener future for the tire industry and beyond.
