SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Mar. 28, 2025 - German Fitness Industry Hits Record Growth in Membership and Revenue
The German fitness and health industry is on an impressive growth trajectory. According to the newly released Eckdaten der deutschen Fitnesswirtschaft 2025 study—conducted by the DSSV e. V. (Employers' Association of German Fitness and Health Facilities) in cooperation with Deloitte and the German University for Prevention and Health Management (DHfPG)—the sector is showing exceptional momentum. In 2024, the number of fitness members climbed to an all-time high of 11.71 million, underlining the increasing importance of fitness and health training in everyday life.
“The public has realized that regular training plays a crucial role in promoting health,” said Ralf Capelan, study author and treasurer of DSSV e. V.
Capelan added: “Our industry has succeeded in strengthening this awareness and establishing itself as a reliable partner for people’s health.”
Strong Growth Backed by Data
The 2025 industry report highlights significant growth across multiple key metrics:
- Membership: Up 3.6% to 11.71 million
- Revenue: Up 7% to €5.82 billion net
- Facilities: Remain stable at 9,127 locations
- Employment: 157,700 professionals, with 25.5% holding a related academic degree
These findings confirm that health-focused fitness training continues to dominate, with 41.1% of facilities specializing in health services. Training and lifestyle-oriented offerings also saw modest growth, reflecting a diversified approach to active living.
Qualified Trainers Drive Consumer Trust
Professional education remains a cornerstone of industry success. An impressive 89.8% of businesses invest in further training for their staff, particularly in areas like strength training (supported by nearly 75% of facilities), cardiovascular training (59.9%), and group fitness (60.0%).
Janosch Marx, supervisory board member of DSSV e. V. and co-author of the study, emphasized the value of ongoing education:
“The high willingness for further training in the industry ensures that members receive the best possible support and that fitness training can unfold its full health-promoting effect.”
“This is a key aspect for the sustainable development of our industry,” Marx added.
As more professionals gain academic qualifications in movement sciences and health, the fitness sector continues its professionalization trend, reinforcing consumer confidence.
Financial Stability and Digital Innovation Set the Stage for the Future
Another highlight of the report is the industry's record-breaking financial performance. With a net turnover of €5.82 billion, the sector proves its resilience even amidst economic challenges.
Monthly membership fees have also increased, averaging:
- €46.95 gross overall
- €57.85 in independent studios
- €38.44 in chain-operated gyms
- €82.79 in specialty studios
Karsten Hollasch of Deloitte and co-author of the report remarked:
“The fitness industry presents itself as economically robust and resilient. Despite macroeconomic challenges, people remain willing to invest in their health. This ongoing demand highlights the sector’s growing social relevance.”
Digitization is another significant growth area. Online contracts now account for 24% of all sign-ups, up from 14% the previous year, and digital workout tools like studio apps continue gaining popularity among consumers.
DSSV Launches Quality Offensive to Solidify Health System Role
To further integrate the fitness sector into Germany’s healthcare ecosystem, DSSV e. V. is launching a major quality initiative in 2025. This campaign is grounded in scientific research, expert events, and active dialogue with policymakers. Its goal: Position fitness providers as essential partners to health insurers, social security agencies, and rehabilitation centers.
Prof. Dr. Sarah Kobel, DSSV committee member and Head of Science and Research at DHfPG, emphasized:
“Our study clearly shows that fitness and health training make a huge contribution to disease prevention.”
She continued:
“The DSSV e. V. quality initiative is an important step to strengthen this public health mission and secure greater societal recognition for the industry.”
A Strong Future for Fitness and Wellness
With solid financials, rising participation, and a strong commitment to education and digital innovation, the German fitness industry is well-positioned for continued success. The focus remains clear: promoting health, prevention, and quality customer care for a better tomorrow.
