SHERIDAN, WYOMING – June 2, 2025 – European handball fans are watching closely as Michael Wiederer, the current President of the European Handball Federation (EHF), has officially announced his candidacy for a third term in office. This news comes just four months ahead of the 17th Ordinary EHF Congress, set to take place on September 19–20, 2025, in Andau, Austria.
Wiederer, a 69-year-old Austrian and longtime figure in the sport, shared the news in a heartfelt letter to the EHF’s 50 member federations, emphasizing unity, communication, and continued progress as the foundation of his leadership vision.
A leader shaped by experience and continuity
Wiederer's journey with the EHF began in 1992 as Secretary General, a role he held for over two decades before becoming President in 2016. He succeeded Jean Brihault of France and was reaffirmed in office at the 2021 Congress in Vienna.
In his candidacy letter, Wiederer reflected on the challenges the sport has faced:
"We are all fully aware of the challenges Europe faced within the last four years, and this for sure affected sport, and particularly the handball sport. The European Handball Federation, its leadership together with all those being in function, be it on an elected or professional level, worked hard to keep the sport on track," he wrote.
Staying focused on development and collaboration
Wiederer highlighted the power of teamwork and clear communication as critical to the federation’s success:
"This was only possible due to excellent communication processes within the system, and thus including the National Federations and the various stakeholders, and as well due to the interaction with partners and media."
He stressed the importance of keeping handball’s heart alive through personal dedication:
"This must be continued on a business but also on a personal plane understanding that handball needs the involvement of enthusiasts at all levels for securing the further development of the sport on technical and promotional fields."
A motivated vision for the future
Looking ahead, Wiederer made his commitment clear:
"Considering the consistent overall situation and the tasks and responsibilities to come, I am highly motivated to lead the Executive Committee of the European Handball Federation in the next electoral period together with those representatives, you – the National Federations – elect to the different functions on the sport-political and technical level."
A legacy built on leadership
Wiederer is only the fourth president in the EHF’s history. The federation began in 1991 with Swede Stefan Holmqvist, who served until 2004. He was followed by Tor Lian (2004–2012) and Jean Brihault (2012–2016). Wiederer’s extended leadership continues to shape the growth and modernization of handball across Europe.
What’s next for EHF fans and members
The decisive moment will come at the 17th Ordinary EHF Congress in September 2025. Whether you're a dedicated player, fan, or simply passionate about European handball, the upcoming election promises to shape the future of the sport.
