SHERIDAN, WYOMING – October 12, 2024 – Thirty-six-year-old Steve Serio won his third consecutive gold medal, and fourth overall Paralympic medal, as a member of the U.S. Men's Wheelchair Basketball team that was victorious over Great Britain, 73-69, in the Paralympic Games Paris 2024 gold medal game. Serio scored 24 points, making 10 of his 18 field goal attempts, in the final Sunday afternoon.
"This is what dreams are made of. The totality of the journey, how much this team has grown up together. We've won together, we've lost together," said Serio. "To cap off my Team USA career with a win like this, with 12 athletes that I love and a great staff behind me, this is what dreams are made of."
The Paris Games are the fifth Serio has competed in, now having four medals to his name after winning gold in Tokyo 2020 and Rio 2016, along with taking home a bronze medal in London 2012. Leading up to this summer, Serio also won gold in the 2023 Santiago Parapan American Games.
Outside of the Paralympic Games, Serio has garnered immense success throughout his career. He's a five-time world championship medalist (one gold, three silver and one bronze) and was also a national champion at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 2008.
