However, in addition to the benefits, they also carry risks. TÜV-Verband warns of potential security vulnerabilities and provides valuable tips for purchasing and using such systems.
The Popularity of Smart Surveillance Systems
Modern surveillance cameras offer a variety of intelligent functions, from AI-based object recognition to voice control and remote access. According to a representative Bitkom survey, one in five German citizens (21 percent) already uses smart video surveillance in their own household.
The Risks of Networking
Despite their advantages, networked surveillance cameras are vulnerable to cyberattacks. Hackers can exploit security vulnerabilities to access the cameras and steal private data. "Intelligent surveillance cameras offer a high level of security. Consumers should pay attention to cybersecurity during installation and use," emphasizes Marc Fliehe, Head of Digitization at TÜV-Verband. "Even simple measures such as using a secure password can help keep attackers away."
Important Security Tips
- Secure Passwords: Use strong, individual passwords with at least eight characters and various character types. Avoid default passwords or easily guessed combinations.
- Two-Factor Authentication: If possible, activate two-factor authentication for additional protection.
- Regular Software Updates: Install all available security updates promptly to close known security gaps.
- Network Segmentation: Network the camera in a separate network or VLAN to minimize the risk of an attack on your main network.
- Disable Remote Access: Disable this feature when you do not need it to close an additional gateway.
- VPN Connection: When accessing remotely via public Wi-Fi networks, use a VPN connection to encrypt your data.
What to Look for When Buying
- Tested Security: Look for test marks from reputable testing service providers such as TÜV or the IT security label of the BSI (Federal Office for Information Security).
- Manufacturer's Update Cycles: Find out about the period and frequency of software updates.
- Data Processing and Storage: Check whether the camera stores data locally or sends it to the cloud and what data protection regulations apply.
The Correct Alignment of Surveillance Cameras
- Surveillance cameras may only record your own property.
- Neighboring properties, public paths, or shared driveways are taboo.
- The cameras should be firmly mounted and limited by a clear field of view.
- A sign informs visitors about the surveillance.
- Carefully select the area visible in the camera image to minimize the risk of spying.
