SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Feb. 12, 2025 – Sextortion, a form of blackmail where perpetrators use intimate images to extort victims, is becoming increasingly prevalent among children and adolescents. The Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) and the Programm Polizeiliche Kriminalprävention der Länder und des Bundes (ProPK) are raising awareness about this alarming trend, particularly in online spaces like dating platforms and chat rooms.
Online Predators Exploit Trust to Obtain Explicit Content
According to the 2024 Cybersecurity Monitor, approximately 4% of cybercrime victims were blackmailed with intimate images. Perpetrators often target young people on social networks, dating apps, and gaming chats, feigning shared interests to gain their trust. "Often, they quickly move these initially casual, friendly chats to other channels like messenger services," explains the BSI. "This allows them to circumvent measures that the original platforms have taken to protect minors." These seemingly harmless conversations can escalate to requests for nude photos or videos, which are then used for blackmail.
Sextortion Impacts Victims Within Social Circles Too
Sextortion isn't limited to online strangers. In some cases, the perpetrators are people known to the victims, such as ex-partners. Regardless of the perpetrator's identity, the method remains the same: victims are threatened with the public release of their intimate images unless they comply with demands, which often include financial payments or further compromising material.
Prevention Through Education and Awareness
"This phenomenon is occurring more and more frequently among children and adolescents," warns the BSI. The perpetrators are usually male and can be either from the victim's immediate social environment, such as school, or complete strangers. This highlights the crucial role of parents and schools in educating young people about the potential dangers associated with their online presence.
Martina Plackmann, prevention expert at ProPK, emphasizes the importance of reporting these crimes: "We assume that there is a large number of unreported cases. Victims are often ashamed and therefore do not report the crimes. In fact, that is precisely our first piece of advice: Always report incidents to the police. This is the only way they can prevent further cases." Plackmann also advises against giving in to the perpetrators' demands, as this rarely stops the harassment. Instead, victims should immediately cease contact, inform the relevant chat or platform operator, and request the deletion of the compromising content.
Building Healthy Online Habits
Karin Wilhelm, consumer protection expert at the BSI, stresses the importance of online vigilance: "A general distrust of strangers you meet on the internet can prove to be healthy. Raise awareness of this, especially among children and young people in your environment." Wilhelm encourages open communication and guidance on safe online practices, such as verifying friend requests, adjusting privacy settings, and refraining from sharing personal information like addresses, birthdates, and revealing photos.
Resources and Support for Victims
The BSI and ProPK offer comprehensive information and resources for victims of sextortion. ProPK provides specific information for minors, while the BSI offers guidance on initiating conversations between parents and children about online safety.
Key Takeaways for Parents and Educators:
- Open Communication: Foster a safe environment for children to discuss online interactions and potential risks.
- Education: Teach children about online privacy, responsible sharing, and recognizing red flags in online relationships.
- Support: Emphasize that seeking help is crucial if they experience online harassment or exploitation.
- Reporting: Encourage children to report any incidents to a trusted adult and the authorities.
- Empowerment: Equip children with the knowledge and skills to navigate the digital world safely and confidently.
By working together, parents, educators, and law enforcement can create a safer online environment for children and adolescents and combat the growing threat of sextortion.
