Telekom and Energie Südbayern Join Forces to Expand Fiber Optic Network in Southeast Bavaria

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Dec. 7, 2024 – Deutsche Telekom and Energie Südbayern (ESB) have announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the expansion of fiber optic internet access in Southeast Bavaria. This collaboration will bring high-speed internet to thousands of households and businesses in the region, boosting connectivity and driving economic growth.

Pilot Project Brings Fiber to 4,600 Homes

The partnership has already begun with a pilot project in the districts of Landshut, Rottal-Inn, and Mühldorf am Inn. This project, supported by government funding, has successfully connected 4,600 homes and businesses to the fiber optic network. ESB constructed the network infrastructure, and Telekom is establishing 11 transfer points to integrate it into their broader network.

"The ESB is one of the first regional energy suppliers in Bavaria that we are allowed to welcome on our fiber platform," said Guido Hüngsberg, Head of Implementation Broadband Cooperations at Telekom. "So far, we have mainly cooperated with municipal utilities. This step marks an important milestone in our partnerships. Together with ESB, we are sending a strong signal for the future – a collaboration that sets an example."

Benefits for Consumers and the Region

The partnership between Telekom and ESB will provide numerous benefits for consumers and the region:

  • Faster Internet Speeds: Fiber optic technology delivers significantly faster internet speeds compared to traditional DSL or cable connections. This enables seamless streaming, faster downloads, and smoother online gaming experiences.
  • Increased Competition: The collaboration will foster competition in the telecommunications market, potentially leading to lower prices and better service for consumers.
  • Economic Growth: Improved internet infrastructure is essential for economic growth and development. This partnership will help attract businesses and create jobs in the region.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: High-speed internet access has become a necessity for modern living, enabling remote work, online education, and staying connected with friends and family.

"We are delighted about the cooperation for the further expansion of fiber optics in Southeast Bavaria," said Michael Schneider, responsible for broadband at Energie Südbayern. "Fast internet is not only central for the people who live here, but more than ever an economic locational advantage that increases the attractiveness and competitiveness of the region. As an infrastructure provider, we have the necessary know-how and know the local conditions. Together with Telekom, we are creating a great and reliable offer."
