AHLA President Advocates for Hospitality Industry, Highlighting Economic Impact and Workforce Needs

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Feb. 28, 2025 – The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) has taken a significant step in advocating for the hospitality industry, emphasizing its substantial economic contributions and ongoing workforce recovery efforts. In a recent testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Workforce, AHLA President and CEO Rosanna Maietta addressed critical issues facing the sector.

Economic Contributions and Job Creation

The hotel industry plays a vital role in the U.S. economy, supporting one in every 25 jobs nationwide and contributing nearly $900 billion to the country’s GDP. This data underscores the industry's significant impact and its importance as a driver of economic growth.

Workforce Recovery and Challenges

While the industry has made considerable progress in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, challenges remain. Employment is still nearly 10 percent below pre-pandemic levels, with over 200,000 positions needing to be filled. Persistent workforce shortages continue to hinder the industry’s full recovery.

“The hotel industry offers more than just a job. It creates opportunities for fulfilling lifelong careers and pathways to accessing a better life—where, regardless of background or circumstances, hotel associates can achieve prosperity through perseverance and a commitment to service,” said Maietta. “The most distinguished leaders in our industry, from general managers to owners to brand CEOs, can recall starting on property washing dishes, making beds, and helping guests. In every corner of America, from city centers and interstate exits, to roadside attractions, and exotic destinations, hotels are more than just buildings—they are symbols of upward mobility and the success that comes with achieving the American Dream.”

Addressing Economic Pressures and Overregulation

Maietta also addressed the economic pressures facing the industry, including inflation, workforce shortages, and overregulation. “While we have made significant strides in rebuilding the workforce and providing new opportunities for career advancement, we continue to face economic pressures from inflation, workforce shortages, and overregulation. The hospitality sector remains committed to attracting and retaining talent, investing in workforce development, and creating good jobs for millions of Americans,” she stated.

Enhancing Employee Benefits and Wages

The hospitality sector has responded to workforce challenges by enhancing employee benefits and increasing wages. Hotel wages have increased more than 15 percent faster than the national average, and employers are expanding benefits such as flexible scheduling, tuition reimbursement, and career advancement programs.

Legislative Priorities and Calls to Action

To further support the industry, Maietta urged Congress to take several key actions:

  • Expand the H-2B seasonal guest worker program: This expansion would support hotels in peak tourism areas, ensuring they have the necessary staff to meet demand.
  • Pass the Save Local Business Act: This act would protect franchise owners from harmful joint-employer regulations, providing much-needed stability.
  • Maintain key tax provisions: These provisions enable hotel owners to reinvest in their businesses and workforce, fostering continued growth and development.

Commitment to the Future

The AHLA’s advocacy highlights the hospitality industry's commitment to overcoming current challenges and continuing to contribute to the U.S. economy. By addressing workforce shortages, enhancing employee benefits, and advocating for supportive legislation, the industry aims to ensure its continued success and growth.
