SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Mar 6, 2025 – A recent study conducted by the Denkfabrik Zukunft der Gastwelt (DZG) in collaboration with the Fraunhofer IAO underscores the immense potential of the hospitality and service sectors in integrating low-skilled young adults into the workforce. The findings reveal that these industries can play a crucial role in alleviating strain on social welfare systems while addressing labor shortages. The study, titled "Integrationsmotor Gastwelt", highlights actionable insights for policymakers and industry leaders ahead of its official presentation on March 11.
The Hospitality Industry: A Gateway to Employment
The study emphasizes the significant role of the hospitality sector in offering employment opportunities to low-skilled individuals, particularly those under 34 years old. According to the research, one in five young adults in Germany falls into this category, equating to nearly three million unskilled workers. This growing demographic presents both a challenge and an opportunity for workforce integration.
By strategically training and employing these individuals, the hospitality, tourism, travel, food service, and leisure industries can help mitigate labor shortages while simultaneously reducing reliance on government support programs. As the demand for skilled workers continues to rise, targeted workforce initiatives within these sectors could be a game-changer for the German economy.
Key Findings and Policy Implications
The second installment of the "Integrationsmotor Gastwelt" study builds upon its predecessor, which was released in November 2024. The initial report detailed how the hospitality industry facilitates the seamless integration of international workers into the German labor market. The latest findings shift the focus to domestic talent, particularly young, low-skilled individuals who are struggling to secure stable employment.
Dr. Marcel Klinge, DZG board spokesperson and former Bundestag member, emphasized the urgency of implementing policies that support industry-driven workforce integration:
"We need swift action from policymakers to harness the full potential of the hospitality sector. This study clearly demonstrates how structured training and employment initiatives can create long-term stability for both businesses and employees."
Professor Dr. Vanessa Borkmann, Research Director at Fraunhofer IAO Stuttgart, also highlighted the economic benefits of investing in the next generation of hospitality workers:
"The hospitality sector is uniquely positioned to serve as an integration engine for young, low-skilled workers. With the right support, we can unlock a new wave of skilled professionals while alleviating labor shortages."
Upcoming Presentation: Insights and Industry Impact
The full findings of the "Integrationsmotor Gastwelt" study will be presented in an online press conference on March 11 at 11:00 AM. Media representatives and industry professionals are invited to attend and gain first-hand insights into how the hospitality sector can become Germany's leading workforce integration driver.
