Hospitality Industry Advocate Testifies Before Congress: Workforce Recovery and Economic Impact Highlighted

SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Mar. 2, 2025 – American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) President/CEO Rosanna Maietta recently testified before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Workforce, emphasizing the hospitality industry’s economic contributions, workforce recovery and regulatory challenges.

Economic Contributions and Job Creation

Maietta highlighted the hotel industry’s pivotal role in job creation, noting that U.S. hotels support one in every 25 jobs nationwide. This significant contribution underscores the industry’s vital economic impact, with nearly $900 billion contributed to the U.S. GDP. She emphasized the substantial strides the industry has made in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, although employment remains nearly 10% below pre-pandemic levels. The ongoing challenge of filling more than 200,000 open positions underscores the persistent workforce shortages.

Opportunities and Career Pathways

“The hotel industry offers more than just a job,” said Maietta. “It creates opportunities for fulfilling lifelong careers and pathways to accessing a better life—where, regardless of background or circumstances, hotel associates can achieve prosperity through perseverance and a commitment to service. The most distinguished leaders in our industry, from general managers to owners to brand CEOs, can recall starting on property washing dishes, making beds and helping guests. In every corner of America, from city centers and interstate exits, to roadside attractions and exotic destinations, hotels are more than just buildings—they are symbols of upward mobility and the success that comes with achieving the American Dream.”

Addressing Economic Pressures and Workforce Challenges

She continued, “While we have made significant strides in rebuilding the workforce and providing new opportunities for career advancement, we continue to face economic pressures from inflation, workforce shortages and overregulation. The hospitality sector remains committed to attracting and retaining talent, investing in workforce development and creating good jobs for millions of Americans.”

Maietta pointed out that hotel wages have increased more than 15% faster than the national average, reflecting the industry’s commitment to competitive compensation. Employers are also expanding benefits, including flexible scheduling, tuition reimbursement, and career advancement programs, to attract and retain talent.

Legislative Recommendations

To further support the industry’s growth and address ongoing challenges, Maietta urged Congress to take the following actions:

  • Expand the H-2B Seasonal Guest Worker Program: This expansion would provide critical support to hotels in peak tourism areas, ensuring they have the necessary workforce to meet seasonal demands.
  • Pass the Save Local Business Act: This legislation would protect franchise owners from harmful joint-employer regulations, fostering a more stable and supportive business environment.
  • Maintain Key Tax Provisions: Preserving these provisions would enable hotel owners to reinvest in their businesses and workforce, driving continued growth and job creation.

Commitment to the Future

The AHLA and its members remain dedicated to fostering a thriving hospitality industry that provides significant economic contributions and meaningful career opportunities for millions of Americans. By addressing workforce challenges and advocating for supportive policies, the industry aims to continue its vital role in the U.S. economy.
