SHERIDAN, WYOMING – May 6, 2025 – A new exhibition at the Baukunstarchiv NRW in Dortmund is offering visitors a rare and intimate look into the creative mind of one of Germany’s most innovative postwar architects: Werner Ruhnau. Titled “Building for an Open Society”, the exhibition runs from May 16 to July 27, 2025, and invites design lovers, history enthusiasts, and the culturally curious to explore a legacy where architecture meets art in playful, thought-provoking ways.
A Unique Blend of Architecture, Art, and Democracy
Werner Ruhnau (1922–2015) wasn’t just an architect—he was a visionary who redefined how buildings interact with people and public life. His work, now part of the Baukunstarchiv NRW’s significant collection, merges architectural design with both visual and performing arts. This exhibit brings together highlights from his extensive archive, revealing a deeply humanistic approach to creating spaces that invite participation and inspire community.
“Bauen für die offene Gesellschaft,” or “Building for an Open Society,” reflects Ruhnau’s commitment to designing for a democratic and inclusive world. His passion for integrating playfulness and theater into architecture is brought to life through iconic projects such as the Theater Münster and the Musiktheater im Revier (MIR) in Gelsenkirchen.
Immersive Experiences and Cultural Events
The exhibition goes beyond static displays. Visitors can explore:
- Original drawings, models, and documents from Ruhnau’s archive.
- Contextual installations highlighting his connection to North Rhine-Westphalia’s architectural evolution.
- A fresh perspective on how his theatrical concepts still resonate in today’s design discourse.
Special guided tours of the Musiktheater im Revier are scheduled for May 17 and June 14, 2025, both starting at 2:00 PM, offering an on-site exploration of Ruhnau’s work. Additionally, a talk titled “Werner Ruhnau’s Democratic Theater Concepts – History and Relevance” will take place at the Theater Münster’s Theatertreff on July 6, 2025, at 6:00 PM.
Free Admission and Public Access
Admission to the exhibition is completely free, making it a perfect cultural outing for individuals, families, and students alike. The Baukunstarchiv NRW is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Visitors are encouraged to explore the accompanying exhibition catalog and register for events at www.baukunstarchiv.nrw.
As the Baukunstarchiv emphasizes, their mission is to preserve, research, and share architectural legacies with the broader public. This exhibition, supported by the LWL Cultural Foundation and part of the 1250 Years of Westphalia celebrations, perfectly aligns with that vision.
