SHERIDAN, WYOMING – March 4, 2025 – Sofia Airport is set to transform its operations and passenger experience with the launch of a cutting-edge 5G private mobile network. In collaboration with technology giants A1 Bulgaria and Wings ICT Solutions, airport operator SOF Connect is spearheading the ambitious €5.9m (US$6.2m) project, with substantial co-funding of €4.4m (US$4.6m) provided by the European Union’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). This 36-month initiative, known as 5G SAMITEA (Sofia Airport Mobile Private Network Powered by A1), aims to establish Sofia Airport as a leader in smart airport technology.

Enhancing Connectivity and Operational Efficiency

The implementation of this 5G network is designed to “revolutionize passenger experience, operational efficiency and security through cutting-edge connectivity,” according to SOF Connect. Covering an expansive 8km2, the network will ensure near-complete coverage, boasting nearly 100% outdoor and 98.9% indoor connectivity across the airport’s aprons, terminals, and operational facilities.

By leveraging IoT sensors and AI-driven analytics, the 5G network promises to significantly reduce passenger waiting times, optimize terminal flow, and bolster security measures. These enhancements include advanced perimetric video surveillance, intelligent ground traffic management, and rapid emergency response coordination.

Supporting Public Authorities and Emergency Services

Beyond improving airport operations, the 5G mobile private network will play a pivotal role in supporting public authorities. Law enforcement, fire brigades, and emergency medical services will benefit from robust connectivity and real-time data analysis, enabling swift and informed decision-making in critical situations.

European Collaboration and Future Vision

This project mirrors A1 Group’s commitment to digital infrastructure advancement, as evidenced by the similar 5GforVIE initiative at Vienna Airport (VIE), also supported by EU funding. Together, these projects underscore the vital role of 5G technology in shaping the future of European aviation.

This 5G network is the second project SOF Connect is implementing with European funding. The previous project, ESAGO, focused on the electrification of ground operations, demonstrating SOF Connect’s dedication to sustainable and innovative airport development.
