SHERIDAN, WYOMING – Feb. 20, 2025 – Vacation time is the best time – at least in theory. But before the suitcases are packed, the planning causes stress for many couples. A recent survey by Kurzurlaub.de on Instagram with over 200 participants shows that more than half of those surveyed (51%) regularly experience arguments when planning their vacation, and a further 37% report frequent conflicts. While the actual trip usually goes smoothly, the preparation quickly becomes a test of endurance. But why is that – and how can arguments be avoided?
Main Points of Contention: Costs and Choice of Destination
According to the survey, the two biggest points of contention when planning a vacation are:
- Budget and costs (38%) – Many couples disagree about the financial aspects of the vacation.
- Choice of travel destination (31%) – Different ideas about the perfect travel destination lead to discussions.
Other conflict factors include the planned activities on site (22%) and the type of accommodation (9%).
How Often Do Arguments Occur During the Vacation Itself?
The good news: During the trip itself, the situation calms down. More than half (57%) of those surveyed say that arguments rarely occur, and 31% experience no conflicts at all. Only 12% say that they argue more often on vacation.
The Most Common Reasons for Conflicts on Vacation:
- 50% experience stress due to on-site organization – unclear processes and unforeseen problems put a strain on the mood.
- 39% report different expectations and interests – while one wants to relax, the other is looking for adventure.
- 12% argue about how to handle money on vacation.
Solution Strategies and Measures to Avoid Disputes
How do couples resolve their conflicts?
- 63% rely on compromises to defuse disputes.
- 26% have clarifying discussions.
- Only 4% ignore the conflict, while 7% simply abandon the discussion.
To prevent arguments, 41% of respondents said that joint planning without pressure was the best solution. Clear communication beforehand (28%) and flexibility during the trip (28%) are also important factors.
Hardly Any Holiday Cancellations Despite Conflicts:
A positive result of the survey: 97% of participants have never ended their vacation early because of an argument. This shows that conflicts do occur, but in most cases can be resolved.
5 Tips to Keep in Mind:
1. Set Your Budget Early
Since budget and costs (38%) are the most common point of contention, financial matters should be clarified early on. One option would be to set a common budget limit and decide together how much can be spent on accommodation, activities, and food.
2. Agree on a Travel Destination Together
Since 31% of respondents argue about their travel destination, it helps to make a list of desired destinations and look for commonalities. Alternatively, one person can make the choice each year, and the next time it's the other's turn.
3. Clear Allocation of Roles in Planning
Allocation of tasks: To avoid stress caused by organization (50% said this was a point of contention during vacation), the planning can be divided up. For example, one person chooses the accommodation, the other takes care of the activities.
4. Plan Flexibility and Buffer Times
Different expectations lead to arguments in 39% of couples. To avoid this, you can plan space for individual wishes so that there is time for your own interests (e.g., half a day for separate activities).
5. Establish Communication Rules
28% of respondents see clear communication in advance as the most important way to avoid arguments. Expectations should be discussed openly in advance. In addition, an agreement could be reached on how problems will be dealt with – whether by addressing them directly or by having a "cooling off phase" before discussions escalate.
Conclusion: Good Preparation Prevents Stress
The survey shows that open and thoughtful planning is essential to avoid unnecessary stress and arguments. Couples benefit from discussing their expectations early on and being willing to compromise when there are conflicting budgets and goals.
