SHERIDAN, WYOMING – November 04, 2024 –  In a move that underscores its commitment to Türkiye's energy future, Shell has signed a landmark agreement to supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to BOTAŞ, Türkiye's national energy company. This deal will see Shell deliver a substantial volume of LNG to Türkiye, further solidifying the country's position as a key energy player in the region.

Starting in 2027, Shell will supply BOTAŞ with up to 4 billion cubic meters of LNG annually. This significant quantity will be sourced from Shell's diverse global LNG portfolio, including production sites in the United States. The agreement marks a major step towards diversifying Türkiye's energy sources and enhancing its energy security.

"Shell is proud to partner with BOTAŞ to deliver reliable and cleaner energy to Türkiye," said Tom Summers, Shell's Senior Vice President of LNG Marketing and Trading. "This agreement strengthens our long-standing relationship and demonstrates our confidence in Türkiye's growing energy market."

For Türkiye, this agreement represents a crucial component of its broader energy strategy. The country aims to expand its LNG import capacity and leverage its strategic location to become a vital energy hub for the region. BOTAŞ, with its extensive pipeline and terminal infrastructure, is central to this vision.

"This agreement with Shell is of great importance for our country's energy supply security," stated Abdulvahit Fidan, BOTAŞ Chairman and General Manager. "Diversifying our resources and strengthening our infrastructure is vital for Türkiye's energy future."

Shell's involvement in Türkiye's energy sector spans over a century. This latest agreement builds on a long history of collaboration and demonstrates Shell's continued commitment to supporting Türkiye's economic development and energy transition.

The deal also aligns with Shell's global ambition to significantly grow its LNG business. The company aims to increase its LNG volumes by 20-30% by 2030, playing a key role in meeting the world's rising demand for cleaner energy solutions.

Why this agreement matters:

Reinforced Energy Security: Türkiye gains access to a reliable and substantial supply of LNG, enhancing its energy independence and resilience.
Regional Energy Hub: The deal strengthens Türkiye's position as a key energy transit and trading hub, facilitating energy flow within the region.
Long-term Partnership: It reaffirms the strong and enduring partnership between Shell and Türkiye, built on decades of collaboration in the energy sector.
Cleaner Energy Transition: The agreement supports the transition towards cleaner energy sources, with LNG playing a vital role in reducing carbon emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels.
Shell's partnership with BOTAŞ exemplifies the company's dedication to providing secure and sustainable energy solutions on a global scale. This landmark agreement marks a significant step towards a more stable and sustainable energy future for Türkiye and the wider region.
