The reasons for travelling are manifold - there is a suitable hotel for every type of traveller. But the demand for health and wellness offers within the tourism sector is steadily increasing. So-called wellness tourism is a growing component of the hotel industry. According to a Statista survey, wellness and health holidays were among the top five most popular types of short trips in 2021 with a share of approximately 11.5 percent. In addition, around 28 percent of Germans expressed interest in special wellness offers, such as visits to wellness hotels or spas. In the same year, around 5.2 million Germans booked a wellness or health holiday. But Germans also continue to be willing to invest money in the area of sports: 14.2 billion euros per year.
Thus, both the fitness and wellness sectors are lucrative offers that can give your hotel a market advantage. In a constant price war, it is important to differentiate yourself through offers and thus be able to stand out from the competition.
A voice from the industry
The Landhotel Voshövel is one of our member establishments on the Niederrhein. In addition to various sauna facilities, the hotel includes treatment rooms for massages, pools, a fitness room and a hamam. We asked Managing Director Christopher Klump why the SPA at the Voshövel is important and what added value it offers guests.
"If you don't have mountains for skiing and the sea for swimming on your doorstep, you have to give guests another reason to come to you for a few nights. That is the main reason. However, establishing yourself as a SPA or wellness hotel does not only depend on hardware. Besides a great SPA area, you need the expertise to spoil guests with massages or courses. A great SPA is needed especially for longer stays. Guests find complete relaxation because they don't have to take care of anything. They would not even have to leave the hotel if they stay two to three nights. Massages, baths, sports and yoga classes, three pools, five saunas, a gym, three top restaurants, an organic bakery, a nice room to stay in, great wines. You get all that in one place, which is quite extraordinary. We want to offer guests a short holiday at a high level that they can enjoy without having to travel far."
DEHOGA Nordrhein x FIBO
This year, FIBO focuses on a strong and healthy society that also seeks fitness and wellness on holiday. For this reason, we are very pleased about the cooperation with which we want to bring our businesses (even) closer to the access to wellness and fitness offers.
To pick up this target group in a customised way, FIBO will conduct coordinated tours for spa and wellness experts as well as the hotel industry on all days of the show. We are looking forward to being on site and to welcoming many companies at Messe Köln. On Thursday, 13 April 2023, trade visitors will have the opportunity to listen to lectures and expert talks on the challenges and opportunities facing the hotel industry as part of the Hotel Industry Focus Day.
